Understanding Infertility

Common Misconceptions

When it comes to not being able to get pregnant there are many myths and misunderstandings. This should help you separate the facts from the fiction.

Fact or fiction?

FICTION

One in six couples experience infertility related to a variety of factors. Infertility is defined as the inability to conceive a baby after one year of unprotected intercourse.

FICTION

Relaxation isn't going to help you get pregnant, however early intervention will. If you're under the age of 35 and have had unprotected sex for a year without getting pregnant, you should book an appointment with your doctor.

If you're over 35 it is advisable to wait only six months before seeing your doctor. If you're past your mid-30s, or you suspect your fertility may be in question, book an appointment even sooner.

If you have concerns about your ability to get pregnanct at any age it's a good idea to see your family doctor for some simple tests and a full medical history.

FACT

In about 40% of all cases, the cause of infertility is related to the woman, and in about 40% of the cases it is the man. There is also a large degree of overlap, where both partners contribute to the infertility. In the remaining 20% the cause is unknown.

FICTION

One study has shown that about five percent of all couples who adopt, later become pregnant – which is about the same number that get pregnant if left untreated. Fertility treatments and adoption are both wonderful ways to start a family. Each couple is unique and should choose the path that is right for them.

FICTION

Many men have blockages or other treatable problems related to their reproductive organs and there are procedures to correct these issues or to make full use of the sperm that is available.

FICTION

Very rarely is infertility the result of a couple not achieving penetration during intercourse. Assuming penetration occurs, most sexual techniques will work. As well infertility isn't related to whether or not the woman has an orgasm. For the most part, it's a disorder of the reproductive system.

FICTION

Fertility drugs are prescription medications. Therefore someone who knows how those drugs work, such as a gynecologist or fertility specialist, should actively monitor you. If early treatment options such as ovulation induction do not result in conception, you should considering moving on to more aggressive forms of treatment such as superovulation or in vitro fertilization (IVF). The treatment option that is best suited to you will depend on your age, your medical history and the underlying cause of infertility.

FICTION

According to the Canadian Fertility and Andrology Society, 65% of live births resulting from IVF were single births. Of the remaining multiple births, most were twins.

FICTION

According to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, more than half the couples that seek treatment for infertility end up holding their biological newborn in their arms. The majority of couples can be helped.
