Infertility Evaluation

Our medical staff will review your history, ask a series of questions and likely order a variety of tests to assess your fertility status.  Everyone’s infertility experience is unique so the Kelowna Regional Fertility Centre strives to ensure that you get the information you need when you need it, as you progress through treatment.

Prenatal Genetic Screening and Nuchal Translucency Ultrasound

Prenatal Genetic Screening is a screening test that evaluates a woman’s risk of having a child with a chromosomal abnormality such as Down syndrome, trisomy 18, or an open neural tube defect. Maternal blood tests & nuchal translucency ultrasound are two available screening tools that can be used independently, or in combination to provide a numerical risk estimate of your pregnancy being affected by one of these conditions. Which tests are available as public funded service or a private pay option depends on your age, how far along you are in your pregnancy, whether you are having twins or triplets, your family history and your previous pregnancy history. All women have a small chance of having an affected child. Prenatal screening can provide further clarification on your independent risk. Click here to learn more.

Infertility Treatment

We offer a wide range of infertility treatment options.  These services can include cycle monitoring, ovulation induction, superovulation, intrauterine insemination and in vitro fertilization in collaboration with the Genesis Fertility Centre in Vancouver.

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)

If you progress to IVF, you will receive IVF services coordinated between the Kelowna Regional Fertility Centre and Genesis Fertility Centre in Vancouver.  We will see you through the initial consultations, orientations, training, counselling and cycle monitoring in our office.  Once you are ready for egg retrieval and embryo transfer you will then travel to Genesis in Vancouver for these procedures.  This typically takes between 3-5 days.  Genesis will also be able to offer specialized andrology and embryology services such as ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection) and assisted egg hatching.  Once you have had your embryo transfer then you will continue to be monitored in Kelowna to determine whether or not you have achieved a pregnancy.

If your situation necessitates utilizing donor sperm, The Kelowna Regional Fertility Centre can help you with the sperm donor selection process.  We will explain the various steps, help you order the sperm (once you have made a selection), and then receive and store the sperm until you are ready for treatment.   Once you are ready for treatment we offer a range of fertility treatment options that can be combined with your therapeutic donor insemination.

Reproductive Health Counselling

Infertility counselling can be a critical and essential component of your care.  Our reproductive health nurses and counsellors will support you during the process, ensuring that the emotional and mental aspects of your treatment are acknowledged and addressed.

Fertility Cryopreservation and Storage

Technology now makes it possible for men to preserve their fertility potential for the future.  If you wish to freeze and store sperm The Kelowna Regional Fertility Centre has onsite facilities to accommodate your needs.  The most common reasons for fertility preservation in men are to preserve fertility potential prior to a vasectomy or cancer treatment.  Some men in high risk vocations also run a higher risk of male factor infertility.  In addition we offer sperm retrieval procedure and cryopreservation.  For more information please contact our staff.

 Microsurgical Tubal Ligation Reversal

Tubal ligation reversal is a procedure that involves reconnecting a women’s fallopian tubes allowing the possibility of natural conception and a lower risk of multiple pregnancies at a lower cost than in vitro fertilization (assisted reproductive technique required if tubal ligation is not reversed). The success of the reversal depends largely on the type of method that was used to “tie” the tubes. For more information please contact our staff.
