Understanding Infertility

What is infertility?

The most common definition of infertility is the inability to conceive after regular intercourse without contraception for one year. This definition is modified depending on the age of the woman and any related underlying diseases.  For example if you are over the age of 35, it is recommended that individuals seek help after 6 months of regular intercourse without conceiving.

Any couple having intercourse on a regular basis has approximately a one in five chance of conceiving each month.  This means that 85% of couples trying to get pregnant will be successful within one year and 15% or one in six couples will not.  These couples are diagnosed as subfertile or infertile.

The good news is that there is a range of fertility treatment options available. If you are experiencing infertility, your fertility specialist can conduct an assessment on you and develop a treatment plan.
